Taxi drivers taking advantage of the Deaf

Saturday 15th November 2008

Usually I have English lessons on Saturday mornings in order to get some pocket change to carry me through the week (mainly for transport). On this Saturday Roger was supposed to collect Aunty Olga's car from a mechanic in Avocat close to where I live. He texted me and asked to come over but I told him that lessons begins at 9am so I would not be able to accommodate him.

Even though I asked him not to come, Roger still appeared early that morning while my mom was preparing to leave home for a teacher's workshop. I was a bit upset that he disregarded my request for him not to come but I still entertained him. I could not bring myself to tell him to leave...I just couldn't...

Well, what was even more upsetting is the story he told me about a driver who took him to Fyzabad from Siparia and asked for $30!!!!! Roger paid him $10 though! lol. I was so upset about that! That driver tried to take advantage of Roger and I was not pleased about it. Yet I was VERY proud of how Roger handled the situation. He did not allow that driver to have his way! Well done Roger!!! Real heroes stand up for what is right. The theme for this year's International day of Persons with Disabilities is Dignity and Justice for all and by refusing to pay that $30 Roger stood up for justice and walked out that car with dignity! He went on to tell me about other drivers who try to take advantage of the Deaf in the country. He explained how they shyly told the Deaf a higher price after pulling them aside in isolation. Roger told me most times some people realise what is taking place and let them know that they are being taken advantage of. Other times, if a Deaf person does not know they simple comply. Isn't that RIDICULUS?!! I was really not pleased to hear this and I am a firm believer in seed time and harvest.
Galatians 6:7
Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.

Psalm 57:6
"They have prepared a net for my steps; my soul is bowed down: they have digged a pit before me, into the midst whereof they are fallen themselves. Selah."
